This laundry washing powder is made with 4 simple ingredients and takes only about 10 minutes to put together.
Living a frugal and low-tox lifestyle isn’t just about the food we consume.
The household and beauty products we use also have an impact on our budget and the amount of toxins our bodies encounter.
Making your own laundry washing powder from scratch not only saves you money, but it can also lower the number of unnecessary chemicals being used in your home.

How to Make Your Own Laundry Washing Powder
Blitz Up The Soap and Epsom Salts
Add chunks of the Sunlight Soap into a food processor and blitz until very small. Add to glass jar.
Add the Epsom Salts to the food processor and blitz until crystals are broken down. Add to glass jar.
Mix All Ingredients
Add the remaining ingredients to the jar, seal and shake really well to combine all ingredients.
Use Your Laundry Powder
Add 2 tablespoons of powder to each load of washing for a fresh, low-tox and frugal option.
I choose to add my laundry powder directly to the machine with my load of washing, as it allows time for the water to dissolve the powder properly.
From this one batch of laundry powder, you will be able to get around 150 washes, which works out to less than $0.10 per wash. Now that is frugal!

The use of essential oils in the laundry powder is definitely optional.
I love essential oils and try to use them wherever I can. Even if it is just for the scent and not the benefits.
My Favourite Essential Oils to add to My Laundry Powder
With each new batch of this laundry powder, I add a different essential oil.
What oil I choose to use generally depends on which season we are in (or what mood I’m in). So below I have listed my favourite essential oils I generally reach for:
- Lavender – great to use on linens to help with calming sleep
- Citrus – a blend of different citrus oils is a fun way to get some bright scents added to your clothing during the summer season
- Vanilla – not an oil I reach for often, but sometimes a gentle and sweet vanilla scent on your bedding or clothing can brighten your day
You can choose to either add the essential oils into the mix as you are making it or to each load as you add to the washing machine, if you are undecided on which scent you are after.
This way you get to experience different scents as you are in the mood for them.
